International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities(IDPD) is being celebrated across the globe on the 3rd of December.

The history of the day is dating back to 1992 when it was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA). It is considered a huge step forward for humanity. As for centuries, disabled people have been discriminated, unable to work regular jobs, attend events, and even being in public.

1. The purpose of IDPD

The celebration aims to raise public awareness, acceptance, and understanding of people with disabilities across the globe and their contributions and achievements. It also seeks to show the benefits of the integration of people with disabilities in every aspect of life – political, economic, cultural, and social.

Each year the essence of the Day focuses on a different issue. In 2019 it is:

“Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership.”

Which is paraphrased by many charity organizations in a much more easy-to-digest way:

“The Future is Accessible”

This phrase holds the message that we should all look towards and strive for a future where obstacles and barriers no longer stand in people’s way. That disabled people should be able to access the beach without ramps, enter a building without the obstruction of stairs, and live life without the fear of discrimination and pity.

2. Who Celebrates IDPD and How?

Who

The celebration isn’t just for people with disabilities. It is for everybody because we all hold responsibility for the future to come. We must all make sure that it’s going to be packed with equal opportunities for everybody to come.

Every year is a step forward to a more accepting and diverse community. Looking back to the beginning of the 20th century, we’ve made massive progress in this manner.

How

UN agencies, numerous civil society organizations, and private companies are supporting IDPD by donating to charities to organizations for people with disabilities. They are also engaged in arranging events and activities for the celebration.

It is a duty for all of us to raise awareness and be supportive of the movement.
